EZ Xports
Case study · Custom apparel for schools

The plain pitch was dead. So we stopped pitching and started sampling.

The situation

Good product. A pitch nobody needed.

EZ Xports makes custom apparel for schools and colleges. The first cold-email offer was a straight pitch. Here is what we make, want some.

It got opened. It did not get deals. The market was not short on apparel vendors, and a buyer reading one more "we make jerseys" email had no reason to switch. The sending was fine. The offer gave people nothing to say yes to.

What we changed

Quality over quantity, on purpose.

We sat down with the CEO and rebuilt the offer around one idea: stop chasing every school, win the right ones. That meant a tight shortlist instead of a blast, and an offer a cheaper vendor could not match.

A free sample, made for their school. Something a buyer could hold, not just read.

It flipped the whole conversation. Instead of asking a stranger to buy, we asked them to receive.

The hard part

We spent real money before a single yes.

Samples are not cheap. We shipped around thirty. The CEO was nervous, and fair enough, that is budget going out the door with no order attached. Some of it was money burned, plain and simple.

We ran it anyway. A sample in a buyer's hands beats a paragraph in their inbox every time, and the whole point was to prove the quality rather than claim it.

Where email came in

The email was the gateway, not the sale.

The cold email never tried to close. Its only job was to earn the sample and open the door. Short, specific, one ask. Can we send you one, on us.

That is a much easier yes than "buy from us," so it started a real relationship instead of a cold negotiation. By the time price came up, the buyer already had our work on their desk.

The result

Two accounts. Years of repeat orders.

Out of that shortlist, two schools converted. Not a huge number on its own. But each one became a multi-year account that reordered season after season, and together they returned far more than every sample cost combined.

That is the quiet power of outbound done right. You are not buying one sale, you are buying a relationship that keeps paying.

The takeaway for you

If your cold email went quiet, fix the offer first.

When a straight pitch stops working, the problem is almost never the sending. It is that you are asking for the sale on the first touch, in a market full of people asking the same thing.

Give the buyer a low-risk first step that shows your quality, and let email be the gateway to it. That is the play we build and run, end to end, for businesses like yours.
